1General1.1 Purpose
This Standard establishes minimum sanitation requirements for the materials, design, and construction ofrefuse processors and processing systems.
1.2 Scope
Equipment covered by this Standard includes but is not limited to pulpers, disposers, and compactors used forprocessing refuse generated from facilities that may generate food wastes. These refuse processors are notintended for compaction of hazardous or infectious material.Specifically excluded are refuse collection trucksand refuse processors intended for use at transfer stations and in industrial operations.
Equipment components and materials covered under other NSF or NSFIANSI Standards or Criteria shall alsocomply with the requirements therein. This Standard is not intended to restrict new unit design, provided thatsuch design meets the minimum specifications described herein.
1.3 Alternate materials, design, and construction
While specific materials, design, and construction may be stipulated in this Standard, equipment thatincorporates alternate materials, design, or construction may be acceptable when such equipment meets theintent of applicable requirements herein.
1.4 Measurement
Decimal and Sl conversions provided parenthetically shall be considered equivalent. Metric conversions andsignificant figure rounding have been made according to lEEE/ASTM Sl 10.
2 Normative references
The following documents contain provisions that, through reference, constitute provisions of this NSFIANSIStandard. At the time this Standard was balloted, the editions listed below were valid. All documents aresubject to revision, and parties are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the recent editions ofthe documents indicated below. The most recent published edition of the document shall be used for undatedreferences.

3Definitions
Terms used in this Standard that have special technical meaning are defined in NSFIANSI 170.
4Materials
4.1 General
Materials shall withstand normal use and penetration of vermin, and shall be corrosion resistant.4.2 Refuse-contact zone
Surfaces in the refuse-contact zone shall be smooth and easily cleanable.Materials shall be corrosionresistant or rendered corrosion resistant, with the exception of unprotected steel, which may be used wheresurfaces are self-cleaning.
4.3 Power and exterior zones
Surfaces in the power and exterior zones shall be smooth and either corrosion resistant or rendered corrosionresistant.
4.4 Welding
Welded seams and deposited weld material shall meet the applicable requirements of 4.1,4.2, and 4.3.4.5 Gaskets and packings
Gaskets and packings shall consist of resilient rubber, rubber-like materials, or plastic, and shall comply withthe applicable requirements of 4.1,4.2, and 4.3.
4.6 Plastic resin systems
Plastic resin systems may be used if in compliance with the applicable requirements of 4.1,4.2, and 4.3.4.7 Sound-dampening materials
Sound-dampening materials shall meet the requirements of the zone in which they are located except thatthey are not required to be smooth. Non-curing sound-dampening materials shall not be used in exposedareas.
4.8 Deodorizers
Aerosol sprays, deodorizers, or disinfectants shall comply with the Federal Hazardous Substances Act3 and
the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act3.4.9 Coatings
Coatings containing lead as an intentional ingredient shall not be used.Coatings with an unintentional leadcontent (lead impurity) greater than 0.06%shall not be used.
4.10Waste and water fittings
Waste and water fittings attached to the equipment shall comply with the material requirements for theapplicable zones.
5 Design and construction
This section contains design and construction requirements for equipment covered within the scope of thisStandard.
5.1 General
Refuse processors shall be manufactured to minimize the harborage of vermin and to permit inspection, maintenance, servicing, and cleaning. The refuse-contact zone shall be easily cleanable in accordance withthe manufacturers instructions and so as not to damage the electrical system and other components.
5.2 Joints and seams
In the refuse-contact zone, all permanent joints and seams shall be sealed.Joints may be made byoverlapping sheets of metal in a vertical plane to eliminate dirt-catching ledges.Ledges shall be easilycleanable. If exposed to seepage and condensation, joints and seams of integral parts shall be sealed andsmooth. The processing chamber shall provide for proper disposal of liquid.NSF ANSI 13 pdf download.
