IEEE 634-2004 pdf free download – IEEE Standard Cable-Penetration Fire Stop Qualification Test
This standard is applicable to fire stops of various materials and construction. Cable-penetration fire stops are intended for use in fire-resistive barriers. Tests conducted in conformance with this standard will record the performance of fire stops during the test exposure. However, this test shall not be used to determine the suitability of a fire stop for use after it is exposed to a fire. This standard also considers the resistance of a fire stop to an external force imposed by a hose stream or water spray. This standard shall not be used to determine the performance of a fire stop during actual fire conditions when subjected to additional forces, such as failure of cable support systems and falling debris. The intent of this standard is to develop data to assist in determining the suitability of a fire stop for use where fire resistance is required. This standard should be used to measure and describe the response of the fire stop material under a set of controlled conditions but should not be used to describe or appraise the fire hazard or fire risk of that fire stop under the actual fire conditions. However, the results of this test may be used as an element of a fire hazard assessment or a fire-risk assessment that takes into account all of the factors that are pertinent to a particular end use. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Purpose The purpose of this standard is to establish type tests to assure that cable-penetration fire stops meet the required fire rating.
1.2.1 General This test method is used to determine the performance of a cable-penetration fire stop when exposed to the standard time-temperature curve for control of fire lests from ASTM E814,’ and fllowed by a hose stream test. The performance of a caible-penetration fire stop is dependent upon the speeific assembly of materials tested, including the number, type, and sise of the module and the fire-resistive barrier in which it is installedL An F-rating and Trating are esuablished for each fire s0op tested, An Forating of a specifed durution estblishes that the fire stop scssfully returded the passuge of fire. flume. and water during the fire endurance and hose stream test. A T-rating of a specified duration esiablisbes that, in addition to satisfying the F-rating criteriu. the fire stop efectively maintained unexposed side temperaturs at or below 181 °C (325 F above initial temperature (for Type 1 tests) or (at or below) the auto ignition temperature of the cable type tested (for Type II tests). These ralings are inended as an aid in aessing the performance of a cable-penetratio fire sop.
1.2.2 Applicability Cable-penetraion fire stops that meet the requirements outlined herein are intended for use in power- generating stations including, but mot limited 1o, muclear-generating staions, conmercial, and industrial installations. Among the cantegories of cables covered, but not limited to, are those used for the power, the control, and the instrumentation serv ices of those insallations. When applying the results of this test to a paurticular end use application, consideration should be given to the uppropriate type of rating (F-rating or T rating) based on facility construction and specifc requirements of the authority having jurisdictio. 1.2.3 Method of approach When a cable-penetution is used in a rated fire -esistive brrier, the cable-penetration fire stop should remain intact, prevent the spread of fire, and restrict the passage of hot gases through that barrier for the required time. A fire resistive brmier should meet the requirements of ASTM E1 19. The ASTM E119 vest is also known as NFPA 251 and ANSI A2.1[B1].2 The ASTM E119 test is designed to measure the amount of heat transferned through a fre-resistive barrier from its fire side to its unexposed side. The fine side is exposed to the flame and hot gases of the test fumace and the unexposed side is exposed to the umbient conditions of the test facility. IEEE 634 pdf download.
