BS EN 15507-2017 pdf free download.Packaging – Transport packaging for dangerous goods – Comparative material testing of polyethylene grades
5 Test specimens
5.1 Selection oftest materials
Grades of polyethylene as supplied by the manufacturer shall be used.
Each polyethylene grade to be tested according to the procedures in this Eu rope an Standard shall be selected from a batch having pro perties in the middle of the specified range in the supply specification for the polyethylene grade.
NOTE The manufacturing process of the polymer and properties of specific polyethylene grades is open to changes made over a period of time and may affect the parameters referred to in this European Standard.
The samples shall be identified by batch number a nd t he source of each sample shall be reco rded in the test report. Any individual sample shall be selected with the full knowledge of the supplier of thepolyethyle ne grade concerned.
5.2 Test sheet preparation
Apart from the me lt mass-flow rate in 7.1 , where the test is carried out on the ma teria l as supplied in granular powder or pellet form , tests sha ll carried out on sheets prepared by compression moulding according to EN ISO 178 55 -2 :201 6 , 3.3 , using a cooling rate of 1S oC/min , condit ioned at 100 oC for 3 h and stored for a minimum period of 40 h at (23 + mould for the compression mou ldi ng – (e.g positive mould or semi-positive mould) – sha ll be documented in the test 4.7.
F or materials supplied in granular powder form test sheets sha ll be compression moulded from material taken moul d ed packaging , produced un der identical conditions. (These polyethylene grades of PE -HD- HMW supplied in granular powde r fo rm requi re the processing / conversion stage in order to be sufficiently homogenized to develop their full physical / mechanical propert ies).
For materials supplied as pe llet th e sheets may be compression moulded directly from the material as sup plied.
Alternatively , a la boratory extru der giving equ ivale nt homogenization of the mate rial supplied in granular pow der form may be used.
NOTE 1 Materials supplied in granular powder form are commonly referred to as ‘reactor NOTE 2 Different moulding conditions apply in 7.4 for test sheet preparation.
6 Facilities for testing
National regulations may require that this testing is carried out at a labor atory approve d for the purpose by the national competent authority. Th e testing facility should be capab le ofmeeting the requirements ofEN ISO/IEC 17025 [8].
7 Test procedure
7.1 Melt mass-flow rate
The melt mass-flow rate shall be determined on the material as supplied in granular powder or pellet form according to EN ISO 1133- 1 (190 oC/21 , 6 kg) , (190 oC/2 , 16 kg) or (190 o C/5 , O kg).
For the purpos es of this European S ta ndard the following specific conditions shall apply:
i) charge weight g for 190 oC/2 1, 6 kg;
(5 , 0 + 0 , 1) g for 190 o C/2 ,1 6 kg or 190 oC/5 , O kg;
ii) pre-heat time 4 min;
The mean melt mass-flow ra te (gj600 s) shall be determined from 5 measurements and quot ed to 3 significant figures.
7.2 Density
Compression moulded sheets of thickness 2 , 0 mm sha ll be prepared according to 5.2.
They shall be annealed for 30 min at
They shall be st ored at (23 + 2) oC for 24 h.
T he density shall be de termined in a hydrostatic balance accord ing to EN ISO 11 83-1 on 3 specimens .
T he mean density result (kgjm 3 ) shall be quoted to 4 significant figures.
7.3 Notched impact strength
The notched impact strength is determined on spec i mens prepared from sheets of 4 , 0 mm thickness compression mou l ded accordi ng to 5.2.
$pecimens of 10 , 0 mm width x 4 , 0 mm depth x 80 mm length shall be prepared w it h an edgewise notch of depth 2 , 0 mm , notch radius (0 , 25 + 0 , 05) mm according to EN ISO 179-1:2010 (Charpy method).
Specimens shall be conditioned for a p eriod sufficient to reduce the tem p erature to – 30 oC or lower and tested at – striker of the pendulum impact mach i ne shall strike the specimens in an
edgewise mode. The mass ofthe striker shall be documented in the test report in 4.7.
10 specimens shall be u sed for each determination.
The mean notched impact strength shall be quoted to 2 significant figures.
The test report in 4.7 shall include a desc r iption of how compliance with the required test temperature of the specimens is achieved.
For example the temperature may be veri fied by using a sample of the same dimensions with an em bedded the rmocouple.
The no tc h base d imensions of specimens should be verified on regular measuring basis.BS EN 15507 pdf download
